So, why biofuels?.... Why not? I calculated my average fuel expense for my volvo; in an average month, I would fill my 22 gallon tank once a week. At 18-26 miles per gallon, I was spending somewhere around $375 on gas alone. Not to mention the oil to feed the leak, and the myriad of mechanical problems that older cars have. I would sometimes spend upwards of $450 just for reliable transportation. In my 2004 Jetta, getting about 55 miles per gallon (I’m not kidding) I fill my 13 gallon tank every two and a half weeks with biodiesel that is sometimes cheaper than gasoline. Total, monthly payment included, I am paying about $200 per month with no repairs required. Need I say more? I’m saving money, I don’t get flipped off by annoyed motorists behind my geriatric junk-bucket anymore, and I have a sexy car.

I conducted a small sociological study among the community to try to find out why more of us aren’t jumping all over the rare diesel Jettas among us. Ok, so I badgered a few of my friends, what they thought and why, with the prevailing knowledge of the superiority of biofuels, they were still driving smoking old Subarus. The most common response I got was “it takes too much time and energy.” The next most common response I got was, “ it’s too much of a pain to try to find a biodiesel station.” Face it, we don’t get out as much as we’d like to. But for those of us who do, here in Northern California there is a biodiesel station in nearly every town or city with a gas station. There’s even one in Laytonville. in the right vehicle. Nearly all later-model diesel cars can be filled with B100 with absolutely no modifications. Biodiesel releases significantly less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as gasoline and petroleum diesel when burned, and has none of the toxic additives and other harmful chemicals that are found in petroleum fuels. You could, in theory, even eat it. But don’t tell poison control I told you that. Biodiesel is becoming more and more available, especially in California, at a more and more appealing price. two months ago the biodiesel at Yokayo Biofuels here in Ukiah
