with my band and experimenting with recordings while my friends where outside playing soccer. I also spent a lot of time at the local music library, which had a really good selection, and it was here I started getting interested in more experimental stuff. As with most suburbs, it became more claustrophobic the older I got and so finally I moved to the city at the age of 19.

There is a lot of great electronic music coming out of Copenhagen right now - what contributes to that kind of atmosphere?

Hmm. I guess we are experiencing a second wave of electronic music. I was too young to experience the first wave of warehouse parties in the early nineties where house and techno started to happen, but some of those people that were taking part in the first wave are still doing really good things here. Like the organization Komponent (komponent.dk), which is a community of people interested in the different ways of expressing art through modern technology. They have a monthly club, and have made tons of great events, involving artists and musicians from all over the world. Also the people behind the Norberg Festival (which takes place in Sweden) are from Copenhagen, and there are also people

like the Ohoi-crew, who are promoting the UK club-genres, as well as more underground crews like Subotnick, Drama and Kill Your Telly. Finally Culture Box has shown that it is possible to have a venue in Copenhagen focusing only on electronic music.

Another thing is the possibility of getting support for e.g. releases through KODA (the equivalent to GEMA) and the arts council, which certainly makes it easier for people to put out records.

I guess that’s also part of the reason that people start up their own labels. Its also important to remember Århus (DK´s 2nd biggest city), which has a really good underground scene especially for breakcore and drill´n´bass. Århus Music Conservatory also has an electronic line, and the city really does a lot to support initiatives to do with electronic music.

Can you think of other places in the world or other labels where electronica is really breaking new ground?

To me it seems that a lot of electronic musicians are becoming more and more acoustic-sounding. Like Xela«s new album for instance, which is some kind of psychedelic folk-industrial. I like this evolution in the sense
