activities over the years and have learned some of the basics of bouldering and wilderness safety. As a mom and teacher I also have a bit of experience doing all of the above with kids.

Some important things to keep in mind for any wilderness outing:
Go with friends.
Bring plenty of water to drink and snacks.Be aware of potential hazards and take the necessary precautions to prevent them, i.e. ticks, snakes, poison oak (be alert and on the lookout.)

Wear a hat and sunscreen.
Wear appropriate shoes and dress in layers.
Carry basic 1st aid kit

On the particular afternoon photographed for this article, we were in search of appropriate terrain for bouldering that was close to home and accessible with kids in mind. A brief hike through oak woodlands with awesome views brough us to a promising spot. A small gorge with a seasonal creek running through offered the necessary rocks for out purposes, and there was convenient shade and water for the dogs. What was there to do but begin climbing around?
